“I’m majoring in law,” said Hyun-wook. The image came into my mind that law students study all day long in the library so they can pass the state examination. He seemed quiet and shy, so I was convinced that he’s a typical smart guy. When I talked with him, soon I changed my mind. He expressed his thought clearly. He was very active in the conversation. His ideas about his life also surprised me.
He is not only a person who thinks about himself, but he’s a person who cares about people in the law status. He told me that he had some experiences as a tutor. He taught children in poverty. He realized that they can’t get a good education because they can’t afford it. ‘Why is wealth distributed so unfairly?’ The question led him to major in law.
The reason why he chose law is that it’s the basic rule that supports society. Although he is young, he knows that he cannot change anything without extensive knowledge. He said that now he is just a student that can do nothing. However, in the near future, he sincerely believes that he will help the poor get as many chances as the rich do.
He doesn’t want to be a lawyer or a judge, which are typical jobs for those who major in law. He is not going to apply for the state examination. Instead, he wants to study in U.S., meet more people and experience more in the bigger world. He is not satisfied with what he has now. He has a bigger dream. He has a plan to work at an international bank for currency reform.
Law is one of the most popular majors in Korea because it guarantees wealth and fame. However, Hyun-wook didn’t let others choose his future. He chose to study law of his own accord. He will choose the next step for himself as well. Even though he’s only a freshman, he has a future goal which is clear and specific. “I want to live a life with no regrets,” he said, and I just know he will. He changed the way I thought about future. I thought that I had to pursue something that everyone wanted, such as money and fame. He taught me that we have to find what we really want to do. He is younger than I am, but he is someone that I look up to.
Chloe's comment :
I'm satisfied with the composition although I didn't get a very good grade. Because I have a few chance to attend a lecture with students from other majors, I have almost no contact with people out of my major. It was good to have a conversation with someone who has new different ideas. ^_^ I'll do my best with the next writing!
