Writing : Summarize the article

[ Summary - the final draft - ]

In Korea Times, November 14, 2008, Jung Sung-ki reports a remark by Gen. Walter Sharp about North Korea still posing a threat to Northeast Asia. Sharp, commander of the South Korea-U.S. Combined Forces Command(CFC), says that, as a shield against North Korean intrusion, the U.S. army would continue to support South Korea. Last year, the two nations agree that South Korean commanders take independent operational control which the U.S. army has had since the Korean war, beginning 2012. He says that North Korea is equipped for war with ballistic missiles. Therefore, the U.S. army will stay in South Korea to prevent North Korea's outbreak despite CFC's disorganization. He believes that South Korean military will keep the security as successfully as they have done.

'Threat in Northeast Asia Remains Real'
By Jung Sung-ki
Staff Reporter

The top American military officer in South Korea said Friday that North Korea's forward deployed armed forces with nuclear and missile powers pose a threat to the security of South Korea and the region.

Gen. Walter Sharp, commander of the South Korea-U.S. Combined Forces Command (CFC), said the United States would give firm support to South Korean forces in case of an emergency to deter any North Korean invasion, even after South Korea takes over operational control (OPCON) of its forces during wartime in 2012.

``The threat to security in Northeast Asia remains very real,'' Sharp, who concurrently serves as chief of the U.S. Forces Korea and the United Nations Command, said during a Seoul forum hosted by the Korea Institute for Defense Analyses on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the CFC.

``North Korea still maintains the fourth largest military in the world. About 70 percent of which is forward deployed along the DMZ.

Sharp referred to North Korea's ballistic missiles and stockpiles of weapons of mass destruction as major threats.

``While it may have limitations, it still can cause enormous damage to ROK with little or no warning,'' he said, referring to the acronym of South Korea's official name, the Republic of Korea.

Sharp expressed confidence that South Korean commanders would successfully execute independent wartime operational control with the U.S. military shifting to a supporting role under a new joint defense system.

The first responsibility of any nation is to provide the security of its people, he said, adding that the South Korean armed forces have a proud tradition of doing just that, in peacetime and war.

He said the time has come for the South Korean military to take the next step and assume the OPCON tasked to defend the country.

OPCON transition slated for April 17, 2012, will mark the evolution in the half-century Korea-U.S. military alliance, he said.

``The ROK Army is able to deploy beyond the Korean Peninsula, as evidence of its support in Iraq, and has proven itself as one of the world's best militaries,'' said the four-star general, who now has the authority of controlling both U.S. and Korean forces during wartime.

About 28,000 U.S. troops are stationed in South Korea as a deterrent against the communist North.

Under the landmark accord on command rearrangement plans reached last year, South Korean field commanders will execute independent operational control of their troops during wartime, beginning April 17, 2012, with the U.S military shifting to a supporting role under the agreement. The two militaries will operate separate theater commands, while the CFC is to be deactivated.

South Korea handed over peacetime and wartime operational control to the U.S.-led United Nations Command at the outbreak of the 1950-53 Korean War. The command authority was transferred to the CFC in 1978. Seoul took over peacetime control in 1994.

Chloe's comment :
It was hard to fit the summary in the right length. I chose the article which is to me a little difficult. I don't have much interest in military thing, so it was a kind of challenge for me. When it comes to the article, I have more to say. It's not easy to "truly" understand what the general meant by the remark. It must be something serious and complicated which those in that world only know well. What I most hate is war. I don't know much about military things happening in Korea, however I just want this peace to continue as long as possible. Sometimes I'm scared that Korea is still kind of in the war.

Article : Another Warehouse Tragedy Involving Toxic Fumes

A fire in the basement of a cold storage warehouse in Icheon, Gyeonggi Province left seven people dead and five seriously injured.
The tragedy follows a previous fire in the basement of a cold storage warehouse in January that took the lives of 40 people just 6 km away from the scene of the latest incident. The causes of both accidents were identical. Sparks set off by a welder ignited combustible material.
Sprinklers had been installed in the facility back in January, but set to manual mode in order to prevent the pipes freezing in cold weather. This meant they failed to function during the fire. At the cold storage facility where the latest accident happened, 3,950 sprinklers were installed, but failed to function.
Both facilities used Styrofoam panels sandwiched by thick metal plates as wall dividers. Styrofoam or polyurethane foam is often used, due to its affordability and insulation. But both are highly combustible and generate toxic fumes which, if they catch fire, can render a person unconscious in seconds.
At a similar fire in Busan in 1998, 27 workers lost their lives spraying polyurethane foam onto walls. Tragic fires at cold storage facilities in Iksan, North Jeolla Province in 2003 and on Jeju Island in 2007 had the same characteristics.
Fire experts confirm styrofoam and polyurethane foam are extremely flammable. Buildings containing these materials turn into toxic gas generators if set alight. It is simply appalling that workers were welding without taking precautionary measures to contain the sparks they were generating.
Fire fighters, warehouse operators, maintenance officials and construction workers must realize that cold storage facilities can easily turn into fatal gas chambers. Until they do, these tragedies will continue to repeat themselves.

Chloe's comment :
When I first heard of this news, I just couldn't believe it. I even thought that the news was talking about the accident which happened last january. It was the same region and exactly the same way that the fire took place. The problems that were pointed out a year ago still existed and causd the tragedy there. Thus, I cannot call it 'an accident'. It was what we could have prevented. I am so sorry about the victims. I expect some serious actions that are repeating again and again.

Music : Ponyo on the Cliff

I want to introduce a very lovely song which I listen to every day. The song is an original sound track from the Japanese animation movie "Ponyo on the Cliff".
Actually I have expected a lot from both the movie and the original sound track. "Ponyo on the cliff" is made by Hayao Miyajaki, the most well-known animator in Japan. His movies include "My Neighbor Totoro" and "The Spiriting Away Of Sen And Chihiro" which were great successes in both Japan and Korea. Besides, when I heard that the famous song writer Hisaishi Joe participated in OST, I couldn't expect more!

However, the best thing that I didn't know about the movie and the ost is singers. This song is sung by a nine-year-old girl, Nozomi Oohashi and two middle-aged men and they make the song so sweet and alive. ^_^

This single has sold more than 340,000 sales in Japan until now which is a great hit.
Since the movie is released in Korea this december, the song is translated in Korean and the singers aren't changed. Check out the cute intonation!!! I'm looking forward to the movie as well!

Writing : Importance of Learning Foreign Languages in College

[Final draft - edited]

There are many things that we should do in college, but I think that learning a new language should be on the top of the things-to-do list. Since primary school, learning foreign languages has been regarded as an important thing since primary school. However, learning languages in college can be a life changing experience that gets more and more important as time goes by.

First of all, you should learn a new language because languages are like tools that help us contact with the world. It is possible to live with one tool, but you will get more knowledge and opportunities if you have more tools than others. In an age of globalization and an information-oriented society, you can strengthen your competitiveness by learning languages. In fact, many companies and universities offer more opportunities for jobs or scholarships to those who speak more than three languages than those who can only speak one.

Another reason that learning a new language is important is that you can improve the way you interact with other people. These days, society needs active and spirited people who can mix with other people well and express their opinions clearly. When you study academic subjects like math, you only need books and pens. However, you are required to speak out when learning a language. If your ability is not enough to express your thoughts, you will have to learn how to use your body language, including a variety of facial expressions. Eventually, you will talk and communicate with others more actively.

Finally, learning a language deepens your understanding of others. You need more than books when you want to speak a foreign language fluently. So, you will naturally encounter the life of those who speak the language through various media such as music, movies and so on. These media include not only the language itself but also the history and culture of the people who speak the language. For instance, if you watch the movie 'Farewell My Concubine' to study Chinese, you will get to know the history of modern China mixed in the main story. Meeting with different cultures and lifestyle helps you learn and understand various ways of living.
After graduation, it is hard to take time for learning something different, and it's more difficult when you get a job. Therefore, it's very important to learn a new language in college that can be a strong asset, by improving attitudes, and helping your understanding of others. If you are just wandering the campus worried about your future, why don’t you try learning a new language?

PPL : Michael Jackson, the King of Pop

MICHAEL JACKSON
The King of Pop, and the Biggest Victim of Prejudice.

How much do you know about Michael Jackson?
As he is one of my favorite artists, I really want to straighten out some about him.
Please read the following sentences and give your answers.

1. He is addicted to plastic surgery. - FALSE
He has undergone plastic surgeries only 3 or 4 times, and only the first one was for cosmetic. He fell off the stage some times, so he had to undergo surgeries.

2. He removed his skin in order to be white. - FALSE
He suffers from leukoplakia which is a kind of disease that makes white spots on the skin. While shooting a commercial of Pepsi-Cola, he got burned in the head and started suffering from leukoplakia. His white face is because of the white make-up he puts on to cover his spots. His mother and sister also has white skins because leukoplakia is hereditary.

3. He sexually assaulted some children. - FALSE
It was totally a FRAUD!
The mother who accused Michael is a very famous habitual criminer in Hollywood.
Michael proved his innocence unanimously with a list of ten items.
However, people only remember the news about sexual harassment, not about the final decree.

4. Michael is in bankruptcy. - FALSE
I think you have heard of the famous songs such as thriller, Billie Jean and so on.
These are all composed by Michael himself. The album 'Thriller' is on the Guinness Book of Records. It is almost impossible for him to go bankrupt.

5. He was chosen as the best artist for a millennium. - TRUE
CNN reported that Michael took the first ranking. The result is as followed.
-----1. Michael Jackson
-----2. Leonardo da Vinci
-----3. Pablo Ruiz Picasso
-----4. Ludwig van Beethoven
-----5. Vincent van Gogh

6. 'Billie Jean' is the first music video of African-American which was on air on MTV. - TRUE
It was 80s, the time of racial discrimination. MTV only telecasted the videos of white people at the time. However, Michael broke down the wall.

7. He is a pioneer of performance in the history of pop. - TRUE
He is the first singer that sang and danced to black music. After his single 'dangerous', the concept of performance review was born. He inspired almost all the singers who dance.

He is a great star. He is not just a celebrity, but a living legend. (He acutally won the 'Living Legend Award' in Grammy Awards as the youngest when 35.) His music and performance are so wonderful that are ahead of times. He deserves the name 'King of Pop'. However, those who love gossips and scoops ruined his reputation.

Because he stands unchallenged in the pop scene, he was attacked, and people liked it. People once enjoyed his music and performances. But when he became not strong enough, they just have fun watching the star fall.

I hope you guys who are reading this post would clear up the misunderstandings about Michael and understand how great he is as an artist.

I used to dance, so I have watched so many performances. And I can say that those by Michael in 80s are the best. The present famous stars such as Usher, Chris Brown and Justin Timberlake just manage to mimick Michael. Michael Jackson is that much incredible.

News : A 21-year-old actress has donated 850 million won!!

This news was pretty shocking to me! She is a famous actress Moon Geun-young and is only one year older than me. It was just impressive that she earned that much money and has a bold heart to stedily donate a big money as a teenager. (She started donating when she was only sixteen.)
Of course she is a celebrity and makes a lot of money, however not all celebrities donate like her. Besides, she donated almost all or a big part of her earnings from commercials, films and soap operas. She has concealed the fact for six years. Isn't she an angel? Her appearance is pretty, but her heart is more beautiful! I became a fan of her!
These days in Korea, Everybody wants to make a lot of money. People do not distinguish good of bad if it is for money. So I think it's a difficult choice for her to donate a great part of earnings as a teenager. Some malicious adults cry down her charity because of her native place and so on. It's just disgusting!! They have no intention to give a 100 won to others and only have disgusting minds. I'm ashamed to live in the same country with them.
Taking this as a momentum, I'm going to start donating. Since I'm a student, I don't make a lot of money. But it's possible to donate a little if I save some cups of coffee. I hope more and more people would donate as much as they can.

Movie : Antique

I watched this movie last sunday. Since I saw the teaser advertising, I really wanted to watch it. In the advertising, there were a lot of cute cakes and good-looking guys! (wow~) To tell the truth, I didn't expect much from the movie because I thought it was just a typical light comedy. However, it was more interesting than I expected! It has some suspense as well, so I couldn't take my eyes off the screen. Because ridiculous situations came out one after another, laughter filled the movie house for two hours.

But I admit that this movies is more attractive to female. Delicious-looking cakes and beautiful men are just what girls like. Besides, there are some comic scenes about gays. If you hate homosexuals, you won't laugh at them. ^^; However, 'Antique' is my favorite Korean movie of the year. I recommend you to watch it!

Writing : A position essay (final)

There are many things that we should do and we want to do in college. I think that learning a new language should be on the top of the things-to-do list. Although learning foreign languages has been regarded as an important thing since primary school, that in college actually can change the whole life.
First of all, you attain another means to live your life as you become able to read and speak a new language. A language is a tool to contact with the world. It is possibile to live with only one tool, but it is much easier with more than two. You will get more knowledge and chances if you have more tools than others. In an age of globalization and an information-oriented society, you can strengthen your competitiveness by learning languages. In fact, many companies and universities offer more opportunities for jobs or scholarships to those who speak more than three languages.
Another reason is that you can improve your attitude while learning a new language. These days, society wants active and spirited people who can mix with other people well and express their opinions clearly. Contrary to other kinds of learning, you are required to speak out when learning a language. If your ability is not enough to express your thought, you will learn to use body language including a variety of facial expressions. Eventually, you will talk and communicate with others more actively.
Finally, learning a language deepens your understanding of others. You need more than books when you want to speak a foreign language fluently. It can be your strong asset, improve your attitude, and help your understanding of difference. If you are just wandering the campus in worry about future, I strongly recommend you to start learning a new foreign language.

Music : Never felt this way - Brian Mcknight

There will never come a day
You'd ever hear me say
That I want and need to be without you
I want to give my all
Baby just hold me, simply control me
Cause your arms, they keep away the lonelies
When I look into your eyes
Then I realize
That all I need is you in my life
All I need is you in my life

Cause I've never felt this way about lovin'
Never felt so good
Never felt this way about lovin'
It feels so good

How it takes my breath
Starts a pounding in my chest
Make me weak, when I think about you
Makes me want to give my all
Life wouldn't mean a thing
Not a happy song to sing
Just emptiness if I had to live without you
When I look into your eyes
Then I realize
That all I need is you in my life
All I need is you in my life

Cause I've never felt this way about lovin'
Never felt so good
Never felt this way about lovin'
It feels so good

Chloe's comment :
He's a very famous singer that needs no more explanaton.
He has got numerous hit songs, and this song is my favorite one.

When I went to America in 2003, I heard this song on the radio. At that time, I was very poor at English and didn't have many friends. Everything was strange to me, so it seemed that I was totally alone. However, this song came to me and cured my heart.
I didn't know either the title of the song or the name of the artist, and couldn't understand the words. However, I just repeated and repeated this song. The voice really made me feel better. Since then, I believe in the true power in music.

Brian Mcknight has got such a great voice that nobody can mimick. Here are some more songs of him that I recommend. I think his voice suits autumn days.

Narrating personal experience (edited version)

'Click-.' With the sound of the light switching on, I opened my eyes. Half-awake, I looked around and found Mom looking down on me. "What's going on?", I said. "What's going on? You tell me what's going on with your finger!", she said. Yes, it’s the finger that caused the whole awful situation coming on.
I tried to hide reddish swollen finger which was almost twice as big as others. I had hurt my finger three days before while I was playing dodge ball with my friends. Unfortunately, it was the same finger where I wore my ring. I tried to get the ring out with soap and oil by myself, but I failed and the finger got worse.
"Oh my god...! It's almost black! What should I do?", she said. She called 119 in panic and woke up my Dad with trembling hands. I was just surprised that all my family members were up at dawn all because of my finger. 'It's just a finger, so don't make a fuss! Although it's swollen now, it will be okay over time,' I thought. , I didn't know how serious everything was until I heard the ambulance screaming outside. My room was now full of people who were talking about my finger. The firemen had serious expressions on their faces, and told my parents that they weren't able to solve the problem. Finally, I got on the ambulance for the first time in my life at 4 a.m.
We went into the emergency room and people surrounded me. A doctor examined my finger and carefully wrapped it. With a serious face, he talked to other doctors and nurses for around thirty minutes. Dad became impatient and asked the doctors why they were not treating me right away. With some hesitation, the doctor said that the ring seemed to be made of a strong metal and they couldn't cut it off without hurting the finger. "We have no other choice but to cut the finger," he said. I couldn't believe my ears. 'Am I going to lose my finger because of a ₩1000 ring?' It was too awful to imagine. My parents got enraged at the doctors' incompetence. The room was filled with people shouting and it was just so chaotic. Dad was angry because they told us to cut the finger of a thirteen-year-old girl. Mom cried out to the doctors to find some other solution. Finally, one doctor gave us one last option. He told us to call a repairman, who was not related with medical treatment at all. I wasn't sure if a repairman could do what all the smart doctors couldn't do. Since there was no other choice, my parents agreed. The repairman appeared with a saw. I was scared, so I closed my eyes. I trembled with fear as I heard a buzz. "It's done," the repairman said in a quiet voice. My finger was okay, and there was neither blood nor cutting. After about three hours, this situation was finished with my finger swollen a little.
After this experience, I don't hide anything from my parents. I know how much my parents love me and worry about me. Also, I learned another lesson. : Do not buy a cheap ring!

------------------------------------------------------------------

Chloe's comment :
It was fun to write about my personal experience. I think I was very stupid at that time. :D Because I haven't got any surgery in my life, this experience is the most awful memory in hospital for me. I really don't put on rings anymore. HAHA- Anyway, I was a little ashamed that Josh found a lot of mistakes in my final draft. I should have reviewed more. I hope the edited version would have fewer mistakes. ^^;

PPL : BoA, the great artist.

BoA is not just a singer for me. She has been the idol in my teen, and she still is. I used to dance in a club in school. She was the one that inspired me to dance.

She's born in November 5, 1986 and made her debut when only 13. I cannot forget how fascinating she was when she debuted. Even though she's young, her performance was better than those by existing artists. Her music is very strong and her dance technique is literally the best in Asia. She also debuted in Japan when she was 14. She has several million seller albums from all over the Asia. Whenever she releases her new album, it becomes an issue.

Some say that she is a manufactured pop star. When she debuted, she was young so not everthing she's done was by her will. However, you can manufacture a typical teenage idol, but not a terrific artist like BoA. Of course, great staffs have been helping her with many things. What made BoA the top of Asia is her great talent and constant efforts, though.

And now, she is entering the American pop market. I know that it is not an easy thing to succeed there. However I am deeply moved by endless challenges she's offering for all her life. It's 3rd debut. :) She is not a person who is just content with what she is now. That might be the main reason that leads her to where she is. I love her music and performances, and I just admire her. She is one of the greatest artists in my life.

I upload some of her music videos that I like. You've got to check those out!

The American debut single 'Eat you up'.

The performance in 2005 MKMF, 'Over the top'.

The 4th album in Korea, 'My name'.

'OVER~across the time~' in 2004 LIVE TOUR

I've changed the design of the blog.

I've changed it because the screen(?) is too limited.
These days, I am fascinated with two girls which I cannot explain without their videos. I tried to upload the videos, but they didn't fit.

So, I decided to change the entire layout! ^_^
You may think there are too much space, but I like it though.

I am still spending busy days after the exams. I'm busy with my projects and presentations. Still, I'll try to upload as much as I can.

Good day to everybody. *^^*

PPL : Kim Yu-na, Queen of figure skating

Kim Yu-na, she's born in September 8, 1990.
She is the 2007 & 2008 World bronze medalist, the two time Grand Prix Final Champion, and the 2006 World Junior Champion. Moreover, she holds the world record for both short and free skating programs under the ISU Judging System.

In Korea, Figure-skating is not a popular sport as Japan and U.S., so there was no famous skater. However, with a brilliant talent and an unyielding will, Kim Yu-na becomes the best skater in the world. I have no hesitation to say "the best" because she is. (If you want to make sure, search for videos of some other skaters. You will know how outstanding Yu-na is.)

She's got everything to be the top skater. Her techniques are great in every part of a program, especially jumps and spins. In addition, she dances to music so well that she doesn't look like an athlete but a ballerina. Compared to some other skaters performing their programs that make me wonder why music is needed there(for there are just jumps and prepartion for jumps), she expresses the overwhelming beauty.

A thousand hearings are not worth one seeing! I'm uploading the videos of her programs.

The former two are my favorite video of her program, "Tango de Roxane". I upload as two versions, one of which is in a clear view, and the other in English. She was 16 when she performed it, and she made a new world record with it(!) The music, the choreography, techinques, expressions... Everything is so perfect. I've seen this video for more than 100 times, literally. It's brilliant, just watch it.

And the latter two are the latest programs of hers which were done in October 26, 27. Both are so great that I am so looking forward to this season. I have no doubt that she will win the Grand Prix Final Champion as she's done for years.

Writing about a person

“I’m majoring in law,” said Hyun-wook. The image came into my mind that law students study all day long in the library so they can pass the state examination. He seemed quiet and shy, so I was convinced that he’s a typical smart guy. When I talked with him, soon I changed my mind. He expressed his thought clearly. He was very active in the conversation. His ideas about his life also surprised me.

He is not only a person who thinks about himself, but he’s a person who cares about people in the law status. He told me that he had some experiences as a tutor. He taught children in poverty. He realized that they can’t get a good education because they can’t afford it. ‘Why is wealth distributed so unfairly?’ The question led him to major in law.

The reason why he chose law is that it’s the basic rule that supports society. Although he is young, he knows that he cannot change anything without extensive knowledge. He said that now he is just a student that can do nothing. However, in the near future, he sincerely believes that he will help the poor get as many chances as the rich do.

He doesn’t want to be a lawyer or a judge, which are typical jobs for those who major in law. He is not going to apply for the state examination. Instead, he wants to study in U.S., meet more people and experience more in the bigger world. He is not satisfied with what he has now. He has a bigger dream. He has a plan to work at an international bank for currency reform.

Law is one of the most popular majors in Korea because it guarantees wealth and fame. However, Hyun-wook didn’t let others choose his future. He chose to study law of his own accord. He will choose the next step for himself as well. Even though he’s only a freshman, he has a future goal which is clear and specific. “I want to live a life with no regrets,” he said, and I just know he will. He changed the way I thought about future. I thought that I had to pursue something that everyone wanted, such as money and fame. He taught me that we have to find what we really want to do. He is younger than I am, but he is someone that I look up to.

Chloe's comment :
I'm satisfied with the composition although I didn't get a very good grade. Because I have a few chance to attend a lecture with students from other majors, I have almost no contact with people out of my major. It was good to have a conversation with someone who has new different ideas. ^_^ I'll do my best with the next writing!

This song is an original sound track from Japanese TV drama '魔王'. The drama is a remake of the Korean drama '魔王'. As you make a guess by the title '魔王' meaning the Devil, It is a kind of mystery drama.
Look at the title 'LIVE/EVIL'. Did you notice the arrangement of the letters? If you read LIVE bottom up, it becomes EVIL. It can be understood in many ways. To live is an evil thing, or, in order to live, we choose to be evil. It's up to you. In fact, 'Mao' is not a drama that gets one correct answer.
The main story is about two men who are obsessed with an inerasable accident in the past. One is revenged on another with a cruel well-knit plot . What makes the drama special is that it becomes more and more uncertain to determine who is good and who is bad. To kill and to be killed, which one is sad? Why is it getting sadder as the plan for revenge makes progress?

I think that this piece of music expresses grief, despair and compassion that penetrate through the drama. Whenever I listen to it, the scenes in the drama flit through my mind. Sometimes it reminds me of the scary scenes, so I can't go to bed. However, I like this music as much as the drama. I hope you guys enjoy it, too!

I haven't watched the Korean one yet. I heard that the Korean one is much better than the Japanese one in many ways such as music and direction. I want to watch the Korean one, someday.

I've got a new phone!

A week ago, my cellular phone(the phone in the picture above.) broke down. I had used it for almost two years since the entrance exam for university. Something seemed wrong with the usb port of the phone. I couldn't turn on the phone, so I decide to buy a new one.

Pretty~ :D

Since I use things so carelessly, I usually don't buy anything white. As soon as I saw this phone, however, I chose to buy it!
"I'm twenty-one! I'm old enough to use white things!", I thought. Well, I know many younger students are using white ones. But for me, it's a big deal to buy something white. (!!!) I'm still a little worried, so I'm going to buy a cover for it.

The problem was that there was a phonebook including almost 500 phone numbers in the old one, and I couldn't send it to my new one because the port got broken. As I bought a new phone, I changed my number as well. So there's nearly no way to get in contact with people I don't meet lately, such as my highschool friends. Even it was hard to inform them that I changed the number.

Finally I came to a conclusion. I went to a service center and repaired my old phone. I finally sent the phonebook to my new one. It took me 60,000 won to buy a new one, and I spent another 20,000 won to repair my old one! Wow! As a result, I have two phones in perfect condition. (^_^)...........

Once I bought something, I don't regret. So, I decided to use a new phone as a chance to change my mood.

A lesson from this experience : "Go to a service center before a shop."

Movie : Farewell, My Concubine (覇王別姬)

I dare to say that 'Farewell, My Concubine' is an well-made movie that has got everything. It is a Chinese movie. The story is deeply related to the history of modern China which underwent a sudden change. The movie's about the actors in the Beijing Opera 'Farewell, My Concubine(覇王別姬). It is hard to explain the desperate fate of them swept along the history and the opera. I'm going to write something here about the movie, but I really really recommend you to watch it if you want to talk about this film.

Dieyi was born having six fingers. Dieyi's mom, a prostitute, cut his sixth finger and left him on the doorsteps of Beijing opera school because she couldn't afford him. Dieyi was too young to be left alone. He went through inhuman Spartan training in school. Because women cannot be on the stage, Dieyi was forced to abandon his sexuality and take a role of women. He was beaten to death for that he rejected the role. Dieyi once lost his finger and family. Now that he's deprived of his sexuality, he literally lost everything. He was only seven or eight years old. However, there was Xiaolou, the friend in Beijing opera school. Since Xiaolou was the only one that took care of Dieyi, he became Dieyi's everything. All that Dieyi had in his life was Xiaolou and 'Concubine Yu', the role Dieyi acted for all his life. (Generally in Beijing opera, an actor acts as only one character for all his life.) Xiaolou also lived as 'King of Chu', Concubine Yu's lover.

The opera 'Farewell, my concubine' is based on a true story which happened in the war between Chu and Han. The king of Chu was defeated in a war and was impossible to break through the besieging enemy forces. His concubine Yu stabbed herself on her throat while she was performing a sword dance. She knew that she was a burden to him. Crying out in sorrow, the king of Chu bravely attacked the enemy's camp and met a glorious death.

It was maybe determined that Dieyi, who was Concubine Yu during his whole life, lived a tragic life. Besides, Xiaolou didn't love Dieyi as much as Dieyi loved Xiaolou. Dieyi's destiny became much sadder when Xiaolou married a woman named Juxian. And as the government suppressed Beijing Opera during the Cultural Revolution, Dieyi was prohibited performing. Dieyi lost his everything again.

One more thing that makes this movie special is an actor Leslie Cheung who took the role of Dieyi. He was such a famous movie star all over the Asia but killed himself when he was 47. Since there was a rumor that he was a homosexual, his tragic fate had some similarities to Dieyi's.

Music : John Lennon - Oh my love

Oh my love for the first time in my life
My eyes are wide open
Oh my lover for the first time in my life
My eyes can see

I see the wind
Oh I see the trees
Everything is clear in my heart
I see the clouds
Oh I see the sky
Everything is clear in our world

Oh my lover for the first time in my life
My mind is wide open
Oh my love for the first time in my life
My mind can feel

I feel the sorrow
Oh I feel dreams
Everything is clear in my heart
I feel the life
Oh I feel love
Everything is clear in our world

Chloe's comment :

Whenever I feel "cold", I listen to this song. Not only the weather, but many things make me feel cold. The song really warms up my heart. I believe this song has some kind of healing power in it. :) John Lennon wrote this for his love, Yoko Ohno. Some people say that Beatles got seperated because of Ohno, and I also don't like her that much. However, it cannot be denied that She meant more than a lover in John's life. This beautiful piece couldn't have existed if it had not been for her. I can feel how deep John fell in love with her when I listen to it. The warmth and peace he felt when loving Ohno are still alive in the song.

Do you hear it saying, "You should love, too."?

Marrying for money?

Do you want to marry a rich guy?

These writings were moved from 'craigslist.org' which is one of the biggest American auction site. One was written by a woman who wanted to get married with a man who made half a million a year, and another was done by a man making that much money every year.
I'm posting it because I think it's fun and related to what we talked about in the class. Don't get it too serious. ^_^

title : what am i doing wrong?

okay, i’m tired of beating around the bush.
i’m a beautiful (spectacularly beautiful) 25 year old girl. i’m articulate and classy. i’m not from new york.
i’m looking to get married to a guy who makes at least half a million a year.
i know how that sounds, but keep in mind that a million a year is middle class in new york city, so i don’t think i’m overreaching at all.
are there any guys who make 500k or more on this board? any wives? could you send me some tips? i dated a business man who makes around 200 - 250. but that’s where i seem to hit a roadblock. 250,000 won’t get me to central park west. i know a woman in my yoga class who was married to an investment banker and lives in tribeca, and she’s not as pretty as i am, nor is she a great genius. so what is she doing right? how do i get to her level?

here are my questions specifically:
where do you single rich men hang out? give me specifics- bars, restaurants, gyms . what are you looking for in a mate? be honest guys, you won’t hurt my feelings. is there an age range i should be targeting (i’m 25)?
why are some of the women living lrish lifestyles on the upper east side so plain? i’ve seen really ‘plain jane’ boring types who have nothing to offer married to incredibly wealthy guys. i’ve seen drop dead gorgeous girls in singles bars in the east village. what’s the story there?
jobs i should look out for? everyone knows - lawyer, investment banker, doctor. how much do those guys really make? and where do they hang out? where do the hedge fund guys hang out? how you decide marriage vs. just a girlfriend?
i am looking for marriage only. please hold your insults - i’m putting myself out there in an honest way. most beautiful women are superficial; at least i’m being up front about it. i wouldn’t be searching for these kind of guys if i wasn’t able to match them - in looks, culture, sophistication, and keeping a nice home and hearth.

the answer

dear pers - 431649184

i read your posting with great interest and have thought- meaningfully about your dilemma. i offer the following *ysis of your predicament.
firstly, i’m not wasting your time, i qualify as a guy who fits your bill; that is i make more than $500k per year. that said here’s how i see it.
your offer, from the prospective of a guy like me, is plain and simple a crappy business deal. here’s why. cutting through all the b.s., what you suggest is a simple trade: you bring your looks to the party and i bring my money. fine, simple. but here’s the rub, your looks will fade and my money will likely continue into perpetuity…in fact, it is very likely that my income increases but it is an absolute certainty that you won’t be getting any more beautiful! so, in economic terms you are a depreciating asset and i am an earning asset. not only are you a depreciating asset, your depreciation accelerates!

let me explain, you’re 25 now and will likely stay pretty hot for the next 5 years, but less so each year. then the fade begins in earnest. by 35 stick a fork in you!
so in wall street terms, we would call you a trading position, not a buy and hold…hence the rub…marriage. it doesn’t make good business sense to “buy you” (which is what you’re asking) so i’d rather lease.
in case you think i’m being cruel, i would say the following. if my money were to go away, so would you, so when your beauty fades i need an out. it’s as simple as that. so a deal that makes sense is dating, not marriage.
separately, i was taught early in my career about efficient markets.
so, i wonder why a girl as “articulate, classy and spectacularly beautiful” as you has been unable to find your sugar daddy. i find it hard to believe that if you are as gorgeous as you say you are that the $500k hasn’t found you, if not only for a tryout.
by the way, you could always find a way to make your own money and then we wouldn’t need to have this difficult conversation. with all that said, i must say you’re going about it the right way. classic “pump and dump.” i hope this is helpful, and if you want to enter into some sort of lease, let me know.

I want to marry a guy who write as clear as the man who made reply. ^^ He doesn't have to make that much money, though.

Movie : いま, 會いにゆきます (Be with you)

Where is the true happiness? - いま, 會いにゆきます (Be with you)

Lately I'm very interested in Japanese culture. So I want to introduce my favorite Japanese movie here. The title is "いま, 會いにゆきます(Ima, ai ni yukimasu)", 'Be with you' in English. I like almost everything in the movie- a story, actors, pictures, and music. There are hundreds of family movies in the world, but I want to say that this is the most beautiful and the purest one.

The family in the movie consists of three persons-Dad(Takumi), Mom(Mio), and a son(Yuji). Mio died a year ago, so Takumi and Yuji live together. Mio promised to come back in 'the season of rain'(which means the rainy season). The movie starts when Mio really comes back to the family. Takumi and Yuji finds Mio when they visit a secret place of the family near the house.

However, Mio doesn't remember anything, even her name. Takumi and Yuji have sincerely wanted her back, so they lie to her that she is sick in bed and often loses the memory. They start to live together again. At fisrt, Mio is confused but get used to the family with time. This moment, the family is the happiest people in the world.

Takumi and Yuji pray and pray that 'the season of rain' would never end because they know she will leave when it clears up. Still, time never waits. Rain stops. Will the family lose her again?

Here comes my favorite scene of the movie!Takumi and Yuji finds out that it is clearing up at work and at school. They are just so scared if they cannot see her again. And they run and run only to catch her. No, just to see her once again. Their mother. Their wife. Their Mio. She is about to leave them again.

I was moved by how desperate they were. Takumi and Yuji never directly says "Mio is so precious to us. We need her so much.", but their faces tell me how sincerely they want Mio with them. Millions of money means nothing to the family right now.
There is a hidden secret story in the end which is very touching. I want you to check it out as well. Most of all, however, I want you to think and feel with the heart what we really need in our life. Millions of money is just hollow to Takumi's family, yet if you don't have someone like Mio that we heartily share love, how about you? Does money mean something in your life?
* いま, 會いにゆきます (Be with you, 2004)
* Director : Nobuhiro Doi
* Actor : Yuko Takeuchi(Mio), Shido Nakamura(Takumi), Akashi Takei(Yuji)
* Author of the original : Dakuji Ichikawa

It's me, Chloe (2)

If you have not read 'It's me, Chloe (1)', Click 'Older post' on the bottom of this page, and read it first, please. :)

Postings are continued with 'Nationality', and 'History'.

Nationality

I try to understand people and the world to some extent. Nevertheless, I feel sad about people who get angry too easily and too often. Of course I can't tell others' distress. But I experienced almost same things and know how exhausting it is. That way of living threatens your health mentally and physically as well. But I don't want to change them. People have their own way of life, and they choose to live that way. The world goes on because it consists of a variety of types of people. Diversity and troubles it cause is a main driving force in a society.

Still, there are too much hostility and resentment in Korean society. Most Koreans cannot stand an instant before a door of an elevator automatically closes. Almost everyone is running on the crosswalk. What happens if we go at the next signal? If someone on TV says inappropriate things, hundreds of protestations are uploaded on the website. At the same time, Koreans are famous for warmhearted personality.
At first I couldn't understand people who had frowning faces. As time goes by I realized it was based on the society and the nationality. After I knew It's not incorrectness, but just difference, I became curious what forms the nationality. Why are we so impatient? Why can't we satisfy with ourselves? What makes us pursue ' the better' and 'the quicker'?

The questions eventually made me curious about other countries' cultures. How would they react to the same situations? Aren't there nations which have similar culture with ours? I read books, watched movies and documentaries, and surfed the internet. They were so different but interesting at the same time. In same Europe, nations have many things in common, but some very respective. ....Why?

History

Finally, I reached to the conclusion which was naturally to be expected. : Culture and national character cannot be just popped up all at once. There is history that has built up everything existent. When I realized it after a lot that was read and seen, I felt just so great. It was like I found a treasure island. I've been taught in school that history is very important when we live the present. There wasn't enough explanation for me to understand its importance from the bottom of my heart. Because I'm the person who love the present, this precious moment, I thought it was stupid and wasting time to look back to the past. When I became twenty, I finally got to understand how great history is.

I can't tell its greatness by words. History has every right answer to what I am curious about. I'm not majoring in international something or history or culture. Some people tell me to study my major subject harder. But I study these not to be smart, but to be a nice human-being which is my final goal. They help me to understand people better, and make me review myself as well.
-the end ;)-
.....This kind of posts are called "a bright beginning and a dull finish" :D

It's me, Chloe. (1)

Postings about myself will be long, I think. So I will post seperately with keywords. My personality is the main idea of this posting. Lots of keywords came up to my mind. You know, there are so many words that can express myself. I excluded some about my hobby, and the culture I like. (such as Superhero movie, Dancing, Traveling, Collection...) I'm going to post about them on other pages.

Keywords are 'An Individual Personality', 'Nationality', and 'History'. These have very close relationships with one another. Acutually they are the keywords I have found as I live my life.
Ok, let's start with 'An Individual Personality'. (wow it's big..)

An Individual Personality

I major in oriental medicine. But what I really want to be i not a doctor, but just a nice person. What am I talking about? I mean it. I really want to have a fine character that
I can be satisfied with. I'm not talking about acting like an angel. I simply want to appreciate my every moment of life. I don't want to waste my precious time getting angry and whining. That's all.

However, it's not as simple as it seems. I've seen a number of people who are intelligent, make a lot of money, or have a great social position throughout my life. However, they couldn't move my heart at all. Honest to God, I have never felt impressed by somebody's material achievement or smartness. Is it weird? Yes, It is. And it became a problem. My parents and teachers always told me that I wasn't facing reality and worried about me being an idealist. I also noticed that being nice isn't everything that I needed when living a life. But since I never tried to escape from reality, it was hard to change my direction. Even now, what I‘m trying most is to be more considerate to people, to be more positive, and to have a laid-back personality.

Actually I was not a born optimist, but rather a pessimist. In my opinion, people naturally yearn for what they lack. I was a smart, cold, arrogant girl. (The picture on the left is me singing. Weren't I taught that smiling was better when singing?) I always thought I had to lead everything and I deserved it. I was angry about the people for the reason that they didn't move as I liked. The whole world seemed stupid. I hurt many people around me with tiny little things. (Some time ago, my mother said she was deeply hurt because I never smiled at home. Even when I was elected as a class president, she heard about it from my classmate's mother.) Around then, I was too sensitive to feel ill, so I had to leave school early at least twice a week. (wow..........)

But suddenly, I realized that what mattered most was not the surroundings, but the way I looked at them. No special occasion led me to this conclusion. It just suddenly came into my mind. I think it's the moment that my agony reached its limit. At last, I was day by day getting tired with my attitude and the effects it brought.
At first, it was not easy for me to change my attitude at once. But I consistently tried to adjust my style of thinking and acting to how I wanted to be.
Happiness finally came to me. At last, I can say that I am a positive and broad-minded person now. It took me almost seven years to get where I am. Maybe deep inside, I still get angry at things I don't like, yet I try to understand them first. Now I can laugh at small things from my heart. I sincerely think every moment of my life is meaningful and great. I thank to people around me for staying together. I no longer suffer from an unaccountable headache or stomachache. I sometimes fail but I don't get needlessly frustrated.

Now, Some people even tell me that I am too positive and too much positiveness cause irresponsibility. I agree with them, so try to maintain an adequate balance. It is hard but I won't give up. Since I know there is no perfect personality, I don't force myself to be perfectly generous. It's not oppression but desire to be happy that makes me laugh.

It's me =)

It's me =)

Welcome everybody♪ Stay positive! we are young. =)
